What Should I Expect During My Video Visit?

A video visit is like an office visit, but instead of sitting in a doctor's office, you'll be in the comfort of your own home — or wherever you are.

Before: How to prepare for a video visit

For your video visit, you'll need an internet connection and a smartphone, computer, or tablet.

To get ready for your visit, you should:

  • Log in to your video visit up to 30 minutes before your appointment using your UPMC patient portal. The portal will have instructions for joining your scheduled visit online or in the app.
  • Check your audio and video settings.

How long does a video visit take?

Your doctor will allow the same amount of time for your video visit as they would if you were in their office.

Like with an in-person visit, your provider may not join right at the scheduled appointment time. They'll join as soon as they can.

During your video visit

When your doctor joins your video visit, you'll be able to see and hear each other.

Your doctor may ask you to:

  • Weigh yourself on your scale at home.
  • Take your vital signs using a blood pressure cuff and a thermometer.
  • Aim the screen a certain way if they need to see a skin problem, an incision, or other issue.
  • Schedule a follow-up visit in person. They'll let you know where and when to schedule an in-person appointment.

During your video visit, your doctor can also order prescriptions, tests, and treatments.

After your video visit

When your video visit is finished, you may:

  • Schedule an in-person follow-up visit if needed.
  • Message your provider with any follow-up questions you have.
