In addition to the virtual care options you can receive from the comfort of home, UPMC also provides an alternative for those in rural areas to connect with UPMC specialists virtually at a physical location.
If you live outside of the Pittsburgh area, you can receive specialty care virtually via a UPMC Outpatient Telemedicine Center, without having to travel to the city.
Please note: Services vary by location.
What Should I Expect During My Outpatient Center Visit?
Your appointment at one of our outpatient telemedicine centers will start like an in-person doctor's office visit.
When you arrive, you'll check in and then your nurse will:
- Take you to the exam room.
- Check your blood pressure and weight.
- Ask questions about your health, any concerns, and what medications you're taking.
Here's how receiving care virtually will differ.
Rather than coming into the room to see you, the doctor will appear on a large screen via a secure video call. The nurse will set this up, so you don't have to worry about any connection issues.
You and your doctor can see and hear each other, just as you would if they were in the room. Your doctor may ask the nurse to use tools that send real-time info, such as a Bluetooth stethoscope.
- When the visit is over, you'll receive a printout of your doctor's instructions and next steps. For instance, it could have info about a change in your prescriptions or where to go for testing.
