The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at UPMC Kane provides exercise and education to those who have had a heart emergency or surgery within the past year. The program consists of three parts:

  • Individually designed exercise program.
  • Monitored exercise.
  • Structured patient education.

A team of health care providers will assist you, including:

  • A physician
  • Staff experienced in kinesiology and exercise physiology
  • A dietitian
  • A diabetic counselor

Our staff will closely monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs during activity.

Exercise

Exercise is a vital part of your recovery. Benefits of regular exercise include:

  • Reduced risk of heart disease and arteriosclerosis
  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Decreased low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or bad cholesterol
  • Decreased back pain
  • Reduced need for medication for some individuals
  • Improved functional capacity of the heart and cardio-respiratory system
  • Stabilization of, and possible elimination of, diabetes

Weight-bearing exercise offers additional benefits of increasing the following:

  • Range of motion

Who Can Join

If you have had a heart emergency — such as a heart attack, stent, or bypass surgery — within the past year, you are a candidate for cardiac rehabilitation. This program is approved by most medical insurance companies and requires a prescription from your doctor. Before beginning the program, check with your medical insurance company to see if you are covered.

SilverSneakers® and Silver&Fit®

UPMC Kane is a SilverSneakers® and Silver&Fit® facility. We offer memberships to those desiring to be healthy and fit.

Some medical insurance companies cover the SilverSneakers and Sliver&Fit programs. Contact your insurance company to find out if you are covered and to enroll.
