Deborah Aschheim works with communities to create drawings and stories connecting people and places. For the UPMC Mercy Pavilion commission, the artist spent 2022 getting to know UPMC Mercy Pavilion peer counselors, patients, caregivers, and providers. People graciously welcomed the artist into their lives to experience their families, homes, workplaces, and hobbies. Through this engagement she created portraits of twenty-five members of UPMC’s dynamic vision and rehabilitation community.

“All 25 people invited me into their lives, not just to have their portrait drawn but to serve as virtual peer mentors. They have taken this thing they were born with or that happened to them, that could have been seen as a tragedy, and transformed it into a reason for giving back and finding meaning. They are helping others come to a place where they can see they can have full and rewarding lives.” - Deborah Aschheim
