A medical laboratory scientist (MLS) (medical technologist) is a highly trained individual responsible for the accurate performance of laboratory tests important in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
A MLS utilizes manual methods and sophisticated instrumentation to conduct a variety of tests on patient blood, body fluids, or tissues, understanding the results in relation to physiological conditions, becoming powerful advocates for the patient and support for the clinician.
UPMC offers intensive Medical Laboratory Science programs at three locations:
These programs accept B.S. post-graduates and students in their final year of a science-based (bio/chem) bachelor degree.
All three preceptorship programs are accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). The intensive curriculums prepare students to take a national certification exam (ie. ASCP-Board of Certification) and also meet state licensing requirements.
