Diabetes Education

The Diabetes Institute is recognized by the American Diabetes Association — the gold standard in meeting the requirements of diabetes self-management education.

Classes are offered morning, afternoon, evening and on weekends for the convenience of our patients. We offer both group and individual education sessions.

The following programs require a physician order.

Diabetes Self-Management

This group course is designed to cover all aspects of diabetes self-management. Learn about meal planning, physical activity, glucose monitoring, medicines, dining out, and coping with stress and sick days. Based on American Diabetes Association content guidelines.

One-on-One Diabetes Instruction

Some patients learn best in a one-on-one setting. Individual counseling sessions may cover:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Beginning insulin
  • Intensive insulin training
  • Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)
  • Prediabetes teaching
  • Insulin pump management
  • Specific follow-up visits

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)
This is a seven-day sensor study that records blood glucose patterns of the patient which are then analyzed to help identify glycemic challenges, reinforce lifestyle recommendations and implications of daily habits, and help guide treatment recommendations to ultimately improve diabetes control.

Refresher Class

All aspects of diabetes self-managment are covered in this class, which is intended for patients who have already completed the diabetes education series and need additional education.

Nutrition Counseling/Medical Nutrition Counseling (MNT)

A one-on-one counseling session with a registered dietitian may be scheduled to discuss a variety of diagnoses or healthy eating needs.

Gestational Diabetes Class

This class provides an overview of gestational diabetes, how it is treated, and explains blood sugar monitoring.

Additional classes include:

  • Insulin administration and medications
  • Nutrition and meal planning
  • Behavior modification and stress management
  • Foot and eye care
  • Monitoring and patterning of blood glucose
