Fabric Health Stories

In March 2023, UPMC for You launched an innovative partnership with Fabric Health to bring community-based support to Pittsburgh-area laundromats.

The initiative allows Fabric Health staff members to provide on-site assistance to people applying for programs like Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and other services.

UPMC for You is UPMC Health Plan’s Medicaid managed care plan. The partnership with Fabric Health furthers UPMC’s commitment to meet people where they are in the community, such as local laundromats.

"It's a beautiful thing where we can help people with their basic needs,” says Dan LaVallee, senior director, UPMC Center for Social Impact. “And then build trust and create other programs that can help us all in our region.”

The program started in western Pennsylvania neighborhoods such as Edgewood, Mt. Washington, Shadyside, South Park, and West Mifflin. The goal is to expand to more locations to create healthier outcomes and build community connections.

"The partnership weaves UPMC's resources into the fabric of the community," says Allister Chang, co-founder, Fabric Health. "Together we are creating a front door for UPMC for You members to access many benefits."
