Dr. Birmaher is a widely recognized expert in pharmacological and biological studies of children and adolescents with mood and anxiety disorders. He has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today and was featured on the PBS Frontline special “The Medicated Child.”
He has published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and also recently published a book for parents and clinicians entitled “New Hope for Children and Teens with Bipolar Disorder”. Dr. Birmaher was recently named as co-director of the Pittsburgh Bipolar Institute (PBI), an international program for the service, teaching and research of bipolar disorder across the lifespan.
He has board certifications in both general psychiatry and child psychiatry. He received his medical degree from Valle University in Cali, Colombia and completed his training in general psychiatry at the Hebrew University, Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel. He received his training in biological psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and training in child psychiatry at Columbia University, New York Psychiatric Institute in New York.
