Stroke Services at UPMC Mercy

UPMC Mercy is certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. According to the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, Primary Stroke Centers use a series of standardized methods for developing or facilitating integrated and coordinated clinical acute care.

UPMC Mercy works closely with prehospital providers to ensure that care begins from the moment emergency medical care arrives. At the hospital, a “brain attack team” assembles to ensure that medical care is ready and waiting for the patient upon arrival.

The hospital works closely with emergency medical services (EMS) providers to ensure that care begins from the moment assistance arrives in the patient's home or in the field.

UPMC Mercy has advanced diagnostic capabilities that enable our specialists to provide rapid diagnoses and faster interventions. UPMC Mercy recently opened a state-of-the-art neurovascular suite. This customized space allows clinicians to perform leading-edge diagnostic and endovascular interventional procedures on patients suffering from acute stroke and other neurovascular abnormalities.

The suite features high-performance, high-resolution, biplane neuro-interventional angiography equipment with three-dimensional (3D) capabilities and advanced patient monitoring systems which operate at 30 frames per second.

UPMC Mercy's skilled physicians specialize in endovascular neurology and provide the very latest procedures, including:

  • Clot extraction
  • Cerebral vessel stenting
  • Aneurysm coiling

UPMC Mercy physicians work closely with the staff of the UPMC Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, where individualized rehabilitation care is directed by board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians.
