Center for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

The Center for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is comprised of experts in the field of minimally invasive surgery who use the latest techniques to treat many of the gynecologic problems that women experience. Minimally invasive procedures can result in less post-operative pain and shorter recovery times.

Reasons to Visit the Center

Minimally invasive surgery has many benefits compared to traditional procedures. Patients can usually return to work sooner, experience less pain after surgery, have less scar tissue formation, and have smaller skin incisions.

Conditions We Treat

  • Heavy periods
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic pain
  • Infertility
  • Fibroid tumors
  • Incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse/relaxation
  • Ovarian masses/cysts
  • Alternatives to hysterectomy

Our Services

The physicians at the Center for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Center have the experience and expertise to treat a wide range of gynecologic problems while improving the quality of life for patients.

The physicians work with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan, considering all treatment options, including medical, non-surgical, and surgical.

Some of the procedures which can now be performed exclusively using minimally invasive laparoscopic or hysteroscopic approaches include:

  • Laparoscopic total (removal of the uterus and cervix) or supracervical (removal of the uterus only) hysterectomy
  • Removal of endometriosis (including severe endometriosis involving the bowel, bladder, and ureters)
  • Presacral neurectomy (cutting of the nerves going to the uterus and pelvis in order to relieve pelvic pain)
  • Ovarian cystectomy (removing ovarian cysts without removing the ovary)
  • Endometrial ablation (a treatment for heavy periods which allows the patient to avoid a hysterectomy)
  • Lysis of adhesions (removing scar tissue within abdomen to reduce pain and improve fertility)
  • Laparoscopic/hysteroscopic myomectomy (removal of fibroid tumors without a hysterectomy)
  • Pelvic reconstruction for incontinence and prolapse/relaxation
  • Robotic laparoscopic surgery (including robotic hysterectomy)
  • Single port surgery/single incision surgery (laparoscopic surgery through one tiny incision)
