UPMC Magee-Womens Hospitals in Central Pa. Named to U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Maternity Care

HARRISBURG, Pa. – UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, a worldwide leader in women's health and research, has been recognized again as a 2023-2024 High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy) by U.S. News & World Report. This is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.

In addition to UPMC Magee, four UPMC Magee-Womens Hospitals in Central Pa., UPMC Carlisle, UPMC Harrisburg, UPMC Lititz and UPMC Memorial also have been recognized as High Performing in Maternity Care. UPMC Carlisle also received a new recognition: Maternity Care Access Hospital. This designation recognizes hospitals that provide access to quality care for expectant parents – serving communities that would otherwise be considered maternity care deserts.

UPMC Magee-Womens provides the state’s largest network of top-rated maternity care. Across the hospitals with obstetric services, UPMC delivers close to 25,000 babies each year.

The annual evaluation assists expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care team, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care that best meets their family’s needs.  

U.S. News evaluated nearly 680 hospitals that provide high-quality labor and delivery services for uncomplicated pregnancies for its 2022-2023 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. Fewer than half of all hospitals that offer maternity care and participated in the survey received a High Performing designation.

To be recognized among the Best Hospitals for Maternity, hospitals had to excel on multiple quality metrics that matter to expectant families, including C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.
