Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is the practice of medicine that enhances or improves the appearance of a particular facial or body feature through the use of medical or surgical techniques.

Unlike plastic or reconstructive surgery, which is performed on a body part that is abnormal because of birth defects, trauma, developmental difficulties, infection, cancer, or other disease, cosmetic surgery is performed on a normal body part in order to enhance or improve its appearance.

Cosmetic surgery can be performed on all areas of the head, neck and body, and is almost exclusively considered an elective surgical procedure by most insurance companies.

Choosing a Physician

You should choose a cosmetic surgeon as you would any other physician. A good place to start is verifying that the physician is board certified in his or her specialty.

Board certified means that the physician:

  • Graduated from an accredited medical school
  • Has the required training in the specialty or subspecialty from an accredited residency program
  • Has passed a rigorous set of comprehensive exams

In addition, the physician should:

  • Have experience performing the type of procedure that you are seeking and meet continuing medical education requirements
  • Practice in a medical facility that is in good standing with all accrediting agencies
  • Willingly share examples of previous work

The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is the only certifying board that examines a surgeon's skill in facial and body surgery, and has established strict criteria for physician certification.
