Many surgeries and procedures at UPMC Passavant are now performed as outpatient services, eliminating the inconvenience of an overnight hospital stay. You simply come to the hospital for your operation or treatment, recover for a few hours, and then return home.

For the convenience of our patients in the northern suburbs, UPMC Passavant offers a wide range of outpatient services — from diagnostic tests to surgical procedures — at our hospitals in McCandless and Cranberry.

UPMC Passavant Outpatient Services

McCandless and Cranberry Locations

As health care has advanced, so have the types of outpatient services used to diagnose and treat many medical conditions. Even complex procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home the same day of your care.

UPMC Passavant offers high quality outpatient care at both hospital campuses in McCandless and Cranberry. Both offer deliver highly personalized care in a community setting.

Our board-certified surgeons, specialists, and highly trained staff use the latest surgical tools and procedures, including minimally invasive techniques. A full array of perioperative nerve blocks to reduce post-operative pain is also available.

Outpatient surgery

More than half of all surgical procedures performed at McCandless — and nearly all surgical procedures performed at Cranberry — are done on an outpatient basis. Commonly performed surgical procedures include:

    • Cataract Removal
    • Detached Retina Repair
  • Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat)
    • Thyroidectomy
  • Orthopaedic
    • Arthroscopic Procedures (hip, knee and shoulder)
    • Carpal Tunnel Release and other hand surgeries
  • Lumpectomy and other breast procedures
  • Gastrointestinal
    • Gall bladder removal
    • Hernia repair
  • Gynecological
    • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
    • Bladder Sling
  • Urology
    • Bladder tumor removal
    • Kidney Stone removal
  • Podiatry
    • Bunionectomy
    • Hammertoe Correction

Not all patients are candidates for outpatient surgery and some procedures still require hospitalization. A patient's medical history and the advice of the surgeon and anesthesiologist are important in determining if the procedure is best performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis.

Gastrointestinal (GI) Center

The new Gastrointestinal (GI) Center at UPMC Passavant-McCandless is specially designed to provide the very best in patient-centered care. Our facility offers the most advanced equipment and procedures to diagnose and treat digestive system disorders, a highly trained nursing staff, a full-service anesthesia team, and an environment sensitive to patient comfort and privacy.

The center includes 26 private rooms used for both pre-procedure and recovery, eight procedure rooms, a dedicated pulmonary/bronchoscopy suite, and a large, comfortable waiting area for family members.

Along with more complex procedures, we perform the following:

  • Colonoscopies
  • Upper and Lower Endoscopies
  • Esophogeal Manometry

Heart and Vascular Institute

The UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC Passavant provides a wide range of outpatient cardiac services located conveniently at the McCandless campus, including:

  • Nuclear imaging (also at the Cranberry campus)
  • Stress testing (also at the Cranberry campus)
  • Echocardiogram (also at the Cranberry campus)
  • Interventional radiology
  • Heart catheterizations, including Coronary Stenting
  • Interventional vascular procedures, including Stenting
  • Electrophysiology procedures

Outpatient Imaging Services

If your physician recommends imaging services as part of your diagnostic or treatment plan, UPMC Passavant’s Radiology Department provides a full array of imaging procedures to support accurate, timely diagnosis and treatment.

Our state-of-the-art modern facilities and technology offer a wide variety of services from simple x-rays to complex PET/CT scans and real-time fluoroscopy imaging of internal structures. Services include:

  • Digital x-rays
  • PET-CT scan
  • CT colonography
  • Lung cancer screening
  • Fluoroscopy services
  • Wide-bore MRI
