Intensive Care Telemedicine Services

Housed at UPMC Presbyterian, the Intensive Care Unit Command Center (ICC) uses state-of-the-art equipment to remotely monitor ICU patients, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How TeleICU Works

Videoconferencing equipment allows ICC staff to:

  • Efficiently monitor each ICU patient’s vital signs, medical record, lab values, and radiology results
  • See and talk to patients and bedside providers in real time
  • Provide these teleservices to ICUs outside of UPMC Presbyterian

Benefits of TeleICU

This team-based, teleICU approach allows ICC staff to collaborate consistently with nurse practitioners and physicians at the bedside to:

  • Develop plans of care for each patient
  • Anticipate patients’ needs and be proactive, rather than reactive
  • Triage ICU monitoring needs

Reduced ICU complication rates and length of stay

According to a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), ICU patients monitored via teleICU services enjoyed significantly lower mortality rates and shorter stays in the ICU, compared to patients monitored in traditional ICU settings.
