Renal (Kidney) Disease Research

UPMC Content 3

Renal disease is disease of the kidneys.

The kidneys filter our blood, removing waste, toxins, and extra fluids by converting them into urine.

Poor circulation, infections, or structural abnormalities can cause the kidneys to malfunction, which upsets the body's delicate balance.

Our researchers in the Department of Pathology study the kidneys to learn how cellular and molecular abnormalities can lead to malfunction. We also research how to improve function in diseased or transplanted kidneys.
